If you need the definition of a pitchers’ duel, check out the Round-Three, Xavier 1-0 victory over Queen Creek on Saturday, May 10.

Sophomore Angie Falls, who carries the best earned run average in Arizona,

  • allowed just one hit
  • struck out twelve
  • walked six

Queen Creek’s Aubrey Chavez, also a sophomore, and who was undefeated this season,

  • allowed just one hit
  • struck out eight
  • walked just one

You can’t determine who pitched the best from those stats. It’s like a photo-finish in the 100 meters in track.

Here’s how Angie greeted the Queen Creek batters in their first time up to bat:

Queen Creek errors and Sariah McNabb’s speed on the base paths contributed to Xavier’s only score. Fortunately, that is all they would need.

Talk about a photo finish. The final out of the game at first base, on an outstanding play by third baseman Noelani Romo, could have been called a tie, but the call was made in favor of the Gators.

However, if the call were reversed, the odds were still in favor of Xavier not allowing a run: Angie — on average — had been striking out almost every other batter throughout the game.

Xavier is waiting to find out who their Wednesday, May 14, semifinal opponent will be. We won’t know until the Tuesday, May 13, quarterfinal game between #11 Highland and #10 Sandra Day O’Connor.

Since this is a double-elimination tournament, Xavier’s semifinal opponent would have to beat the Gators twice in a row to advance to next Monday’s final.
