Xavier Cross Country competes in prestigious Desert Twilight meet under the lights

September 25, 2021

Xavier Cross Country competed under the lights — at least in the Varsity Sweepstakes Race — at the high-quality Desert Twilight meet in Queen Creek on Friday, September 24. This meet draws the best teams from Arizona along with quality teams from California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Led by SR Tatum Goforth (52nd), Xavier took 15th place out of 23 teams and 187 runners in the featured Sweepstakes girls race.

The Sweepstakes race featured a team from Colorado, Niwot HS, that dominated the competition with five runners in the top 17 and six in the top 20. Six Niwot runners crossed the finish line in less than 18 minutes. To put that in perspective, one team put three runners under 18 minutes, a few teams put two runners under 18, and the majority of teams had one or none finishing in less than 18 minutes.

Led by FR Maggie Mostoller (17th), Xavier took 2nd place in the Large School Freshman Race. Their 2nd place finish was made possible by a “small top-five spread”: five Xavier runners finished within a relatively small 79-second window, taking the 17th, 27th, 29th, 31st, and 33rd places out of 160 runners.
