Track & Field Highlights at Chandler Rotary Invitational

April 11, 2021

The Xavier Track & Field team competed in the prestigious Chandler Rotary Invitational, a meet that typically attracts schools from other states. This year, however, it looks like it was an all-Arizona affair due to Covid-19 precautions. Other changes this year included:

  • Competition was divided into two big-school levels (Elite and Open) instead of the normal three (Elite, Seeded, Open), and a small-school level was added — its session was held on Wednesday.
  • The Elite level competed on Friday afternoon/evening instead of the customary Saturday afternoon/evening.
  • The Open level competed on Saturday instead of the customary Friday.

As usual there was no team scoring for this meet.

Xavier athletes completed only in the Open session this year, and there were some outstanding highlights for our Gator tracksters, including the following PERSONAL BESTS and XAVIER ALL-TIME BEST PERFORMANCES:

Avery Allen, who already improved her Pole Vault best by 1 1/2 feet (8ft to 9-6) and moved into a tie for 3rd on the All-time Xavier top ten pole vaulter list on Tuesday, elevated her PR standard by another 6 inches.

— Avery is now at 10 ft and in sole possession of 2nd place on the Xavier Top Ten list. Avery has the rest of this season and one more complete season to catch Xavier’s top pole vaulter, Jenna Fitzgerald ’15, who finished with an outstanding 11-6 mark for her Xavier career.

— Besides all that, Avery took first place in Saturday’s Open division competition.

Bethany Barnwell improved on her PR in the Javelin by a solid 6 ft 2 in. from 72-6 to 78-8. This moves her up in the All-time Xavier Top Ten List for Javelin from 9th to 4th.

Ellie Higgins: Two PRs: 100m high hurdles and 300m intermediate hurdles.

Lily Beaver: 8.7-sec PR in the 1600m

Summer Goodman: 7-sec PR in the 1600m

Morgan Finch and Mackenzie Lopez both got PRs in the High Jump with very respectable jumps of 4-10. For Morgan, it was an amazing 6-inch improvement.

PRs for Lourdes Lauterborn (400m) and Grace Kline (800m). Grace has improved over 16 seconds since the beginning of this season.
