Virginia G. Piper

Virginia G. Piper supported Xavier College Preparatory throughout her lifetime and after her death. Her legacy is evident in two major buildings on campus – the Piper Center for Math and Science (1994), and the Virginia G. Piper Performing Arts Center (2003).

Her generous gifts provide thousands of young women each year with the challenging curriculum and unprecedented leadership opportunities in the arts and sciences. The Xavier community remains most grateful to Mrs. Piper and the Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust.

2018-2019 Performances

Seussical

Seussical is the magical musical created from the stories by Dr. Seuss (Theodore Seuss Geisel).  The musical, written by Lynn Ahrens and Steve Flaherty who also wrote Once on this Island and Ragtime, primarily follows Horton and his adventures with the Whos, the Egg, and Gertrude McFuzz, with The Cat in the Hat as a sort of master of ceremonies.  We get to see the stories come to life through the imagination of Jojo, a young boy.  Audiences are reminded, “Anything is possible,” and “A person’s a person, no matter how small.”  When we feel “Alone in the universe,” we should never forget there is someone watching over us; we are not alone.

The show is filled with crazy adventures, from the jungle to the circus to Whoville and beyond.  The journey is told with kindness and leaves us with a sense of belonging.  Plus, the music is absolutely beautiful and the story fantastical and super entertaining!  Audiences will find themselves wanting to sing the music long after the performance is over.

Suitable for the entire family, we encourage you to bring children, parents, grandparents, neighbors, and all who enjoy a powerful, positive story with wonderful music and a super imaginative, fun journey.

Working

Working is a very special musical.  The music and dialogue allow us to see and engage with regular people in regular jobs around the United States.  Based on the book, Working, by Studs Terkel, the music and stories of the ordinary working folks of our country will leave the audience incredibly moved and proud to be a part of humankind.  Nominated for six Tony Awards, the musical has music written by various songwriters, including Mary Rodgers, Craig Carnelia, Stephen Schwartz, James Taylor (the only songs he wrote for the stage), and Lin-Manuel Miranda of In The Heights and Hamilton fame.

No matter what the jobs, the humanity and truths expressed by the real people Mr. Terkel interviewed will shine through.  Theatre is meant to explore what it is to be human and celebrate the human spirit.  Rarely will you find something on stage express it so well and so beautifully.

Suitable for your family, you won’t want to miss this glimpse into working people’s lives and what they do in this wonderful world in which we live.
