Senior Kennedy Frakes Shines at Devon Allen Invitational Track Meet
Chris Pfaff, Xavier Sportswriter
Twenty teams descended upon the Brophy Track for the Devon Allen Invitational on Friday, March 13.
The meet's namesake, Devon Allen, graduated from Brophy in 2013 and set state records in the 110m and 300m hurdles. He went on to the University of Oregon, where he won Pac-12 and NCAA championships. He won USA national titles, and he ran in the Olympics twice, making the finals both times.
Xavier, as a team, finished 11th in the meet; however, track & field also contains a strong individual component. Athletes do not have to win or score points in order to find success. Many competitors measure their performances against their personal or season bests. Improving on a personal best brings satisfaction regardless of how others perform. In my track articles I will focus on top performers and athletes getting personal bests.
Presently, senior Kennedy Frakes is the most competitive Xavier track athlete at the State level. She finished third at the Division 1 State Cross Country meet in the fall. In the spring, she is currently ranked third in the State -- according to MaxPreps -- in the 1600m and the 3200m races.
At last weekend's Aztec Invitational, Kennedy ran her first-ever 3200m race, taking second place and running it in a time of 11:07.81. She is approximately eight seconds away from entering the Xavier 3200m All-Time Top-Ten list.
The 3200m and 1600m Top-Ten lists are the two most prestigious top-ten lists in Xavier Track and Field.
On Friday, Kennedy ran her first-ever 1600m race. She took second place, running an outstanding time of 5:07.10. She is less than three seconds away from cracking the 1600m Xavier Top-Ten list.
Note: because spectators were encouraged to come down to the track to cheer on the 1600m runners, and because multiple canopies populated the infield, I could not shoot video having an unobstructed view of the entire race. Therefore, this is not my normal 1600m race video.
Gator individual performances making the top 8 in an event:

7th - Frosh Avaani Lallian - 800m - Personal Best
8th - Soph Nina Rao - 800m - first time under 2:30
