Pitchers' Duel and Homerun Derby Favors Gator Softball Team

Chris Pfaff, Xavier Sportswriter

Last night's softball game against the Hamilton Huskies at Petznick Field was certainly a low-scoring affair, but Xavier pitcher, sophomore Sydney Root, was clearly the best pitcher, and Xavier skunked Hamilton in the home run derby.

Sydney recorded thirteen strikeouts while facing twenty-seven batters, and she allowed five hits. Striking out half the batters faced is an amazing performance that is worthy of acclaim. Meanwhile, the two Hamilton pitchers combined to strike out three Gators and allow six hits.

The problem for the Huskies came in the third inning when juniors Sariah McNabb and Joie Ramos blasted back-to-back home runs. The two long balls provided all the runs Xavier would need in their 2-1 victory over Hamilton. Joie's homerun was her first as a Gator.

The highlight video below features the three aforementioned players along with other notable performances.
