Xavier Flag Football Falls to Higley in Season Opener

Chris Pfaff, Xavier Sportswriter
Tuesday night, 9/22, on Petznick Field, Xavier Flag Football lost their season opener to the Higley Knights 0-10.

Let's look at this game's journey in a positive light.
(No, I have not lost my mind)
  • The game was a scoreless tie or 0-3, essentially, for the first three quarters. Higley scored their touchdown with 1:18 left in the third quarter. So, it was a nailbiter for nearly three fourths of the game.
  • The Gators lost by just ten points in spite of giving up seven interceptions, being intercepted at least once in each quarter.
  • Players playing in the skill positions (offensive players whose main responsibility is to handle the ball, gain yards, and score points) are young. The two quarterbacks include one freshman and one sophomore. The four receivers featured in the OFFENSE highlights video include one junior, two sophomores, and a freshman.
  • The six defensive players producing highlights (rushers, defensive backs, and safeties) include one senior, one junior, three sophomores, and one freshman.
  • The speedy, exciting-to-watch punt returner and quarterback chaser is a freshman.
  • Ten players made the OFFENSE and DEFENSE highlight videos: one senior, one junior, five sophomores, and three freshmen.
This young team should see great amounts of improvement throughout the 2026 campaign  and produce excitement and hope for future seasons. With this year's team of youngsters, Coach Matthew Reum and staff are laying a solid foundation for Xavier's flag football future.
Three players who caught my attention:
  • Sophomore Evania Maas, who already has a storied history in the national flag football scene, produced some amazing highlights in Tuesday's game as a wide receiver.
  • Giselle Robinson-Walwyn is a force to be reckoned with on both sides of the ball as a wide receiver and as a defensive back. And she is just a freshman.
  • Another freshman, L Hopkins, is an exciting player to watch. Her speed and quickness are used effectively as a punt returner and as a rusher chasing down quarterbacks. See her in both roles in the DEFENSE highlight video.

Note: When I say "QB O'Brien" in this video, I mean "quarterback O'Brien".
