Entering Day 1 of the AIA Division 1 State Golf Championships, predicting the eventual team and individual champions would have been precarious at best. In other words, you wouldn't be advised to "bet your mortgage" on your speculative choices.
Would the Gators of Xavier win? Or would it be the Colts of Casteel?
Would Xavier Junior Alexis Lamadrid win the individual title? Or would it be Colts Senior Julia Herzberg?
The cloud of precarity remained following the completion of Day 1.
Xavier led by one stroke after six holes, but Casteel turned the tables, leading by six after eleven holes and maintaining that six-stroke advantage until five holes remained.
As folks were rushing to bet the mortgage on Casteel, the Gators went (-4) over the last five holes; the Colts, (+2).
The Gators and Colts were knotted at (+4) going into Day 2.
In the Individual race, Casteel's Herzberg, held a three-stoke advantage for five of the back-nine holes until Xavier's Lamadrid finished the round with an eagle on 18. Herzberg enters Day 2 with a two-stroke advantage.
But Lamadrid is the defending Individual champion and is certainly capable of making a comeback. Precarity prevails.
DAY TWO (Tuesday, 11/4)
By the end of Round 1 on the last day of the State tournament, precarity regarding the team title had pretty much left the building.
Xavier held an eleven-stroke advantage by going (-4) on the front nine and Casteel going (+7).
The Gators (577) finished with a 12-stroke advantage over Casteel (589) to win their 40th State Golf Title in school history!
Clarity regarding the Individual Title didn't crystalize until the middle of the back nine.
Lamadrid and Herzberg were tied after playing the front nine of the final day of the tournament.
However, by the 14th hole, Lamadrid held a five-stroke advantage and hung on to win by two strokes: 135 (-9) to 137 (-7). Lamadrid successfully defends her 2024 crown.
On Day Two, all five Xavier players improved on their Day One scores, and three made the top ten:
(JR) Alexis: 68-67 - (1st)
(SR) Isabella Piazza: 73-72 - (T-4th)
(FR) Addison Taylor: 75-71 - (8th)
(SR) Natalia Lamadrid: 76-75 - (T-12th)
(SR) Ellie von Kolen: 79-78 - (T-17th)
Note that Addison, just a freshman, made the top ten. She finished as the State tournament's top freshman.
