VIDEO: Xavier Highlights From Sets 1 & 2#1 vs #16, defending State Champion Xavier was supposed to win their first round 6A State Volleyball match versus Red Mountain last night at Xavier's Activity Center.
However, the Mountain Lions brought the fight to the top-ranked Gators for much of the first two sets until running out of gas in the third and final set.
- Late in the first set, Xavier led by just one point, 19-18, before executing two 3-point runs to win by six, 25-19.
- In the middle of the second set, Xavier led by just one point, 11-10, before going on a 6-point run with senior Mattea Saunders serving up a couple of aces along the way. Xavier won by ten, 25-15.
- In the final set, the Gators jumped out to a 4-0 lead and, aided by runs of nine and seven, quickly finished off the Mountain Lions, winning by twenty, 25-5.
Sophomore Annabelle Ross (12 kills), Junior Tessa Larkin (10 kills), and Sophomore Amari Frazier (9 kills) provided the true meaning of power volleyball. And yes, all three are scheduled to return to haunt next year's opponents.
Seniors Selah O'Connor (19 assists), Vivian Hickman (9 assists), and Mattea Saunders (3 assists) continued their outstanding work setting things up for the hitters. Mattea added a match-high fourteen digs, and Vivian added a match-high six service aces.
Annabelle was named MaxPreps Outstanding Player of the game -- clearly deserved -- as she added nine blocks to go along with her aforementioned twelve kills.
Next Monday, November 10, at 6:00 pm, Xavier plays on their home court versus #8 Liberty in the State Quarterfinals. Go Gators!
