#8 Xavier Badminton Dominates State Round-One Match-up vs #9

Chris Pfaff, Xavier Sportswriter
#8 Xavier Badminton had no trouble taking care of #9 Mountain Ridge 5-1 in the first round of the Division 1 State Badminton Tournament yesterday afternoon at Xavier.

After Xavier's five Singles victories,  it was not necessary to play the Doubles matches since the first team to garner five points is declared the winner.

Three Gators secured two-game shutouts for their individual matches.

However, both #2 Ava Shoen and #6 Catalina Diaz had to overcome first-game losses, being forced to win the remaining two games within their individual matches, infusing a dose of tension into the atmosphere. Success in both situations!

SINGLES

#3 Mackenna Packer's injury and subsequent forfeiture of her individual match accounted for Mountain Ridge's only point. All other individual matches resulted in Gator victories.
#1 Nadia Zielinski:  2-0 (21-19, 21-15)
#2 Ava Shoen:  2-1 (13-21, 21-11, 21-11)
#3 Mackenna Packer: Forfeit by injury
#4 Keegan Packer:  2-0 (21-16, 23-21)
#5 Claire Vanderwey:  2-0 (21-12, 21-8)
#6 Catalina Diaz:  2-1 (13-21, 21-12, 21-19)

The quarterfinals of State will not be so inviting to the Gators, as they will face the undefeated, #1 Hamilton Huskies. The match will be played at 3:15 today at Hamilton High School.

My two favorite video clips: the last two clips of the highlight video (both feature Catalina Diaz)
VIDEO: Xavier Highlights

Note: the number of video clips varies from player to player.  While I can spread out my time filming each player relatively evenly amongst the players, I cannot control the number of rallies that qualify to make the highlight video. Sometimes I find myself filming when a player is going through a rough patch in their performance.
