Xavier Volleyball Dominates Long-Time Volleyball Rival in Straight Sets

Chris Pfaff, Xavier Sportswriter
The Xavier Gators hosted perennial volleyball rival the Corona del Sol Aztecs on Tuesday night and handled them decisively, sweeping them 3-0 (25-17, 25-14, 25-18).

Over the last 25 years, Xavier and Corona have met in the State Championship match six times, including the last two years in a row. The Gators have come out on top every time.

The Aztecs, however, have played in the State Championship match five times without the Gators being present, winning two state titles.

The state rankings as of noon today have the young Gator team sitting at #3 and the Aztecs at #11.

Although I was expecting to see a more competitive battle, the eventual outcome seemed inevitable after the first set.

Corona had moments of success digging out and blocking Xavier hits, and some of their kills seemed powerful enough to cause divots in the gym floor, but they lacked consistency.

Xavier, on the other hand, was more consistent and unrelenting in their powerful attacks into the Aztec side of the net.

Players who caught my attention as I worked on the highlight video:
  • Sahmone Wadsworth: Besides causing havoc at the net with blocking and kills, she had some great digs and serve receives.
  • Tessa Larkin:  continues to pound holes in the gym floor with her kill shots. In addition, she had the second most digs and delivered the most service aces on the team.
  • Annabelle Ross: dominated the middle of the net as usual, controlling the net with her blocking on the left, right, and middle, and slamming the ball into the Aztec side of the court on many occasions.
  • Kalenna Thiele: The freshman was solid again at the Libero position, and she had a team-high 12 digs.
  • Senalah Sagiao: had a team-high 14 assists as she continues to excel as a freshman setter.
