Xavier Softball Earns Third Straight State Championship Appearance

Chris Pfaff, Xavier Sportswriter

It was never very close. Xavier came out of the gate Thursday night at Mesa High School ready to take care of business.

The Gators scored two runs in the first inning to get a jump on the Pinnacle Pioneers in the second game of the semifinals. By the end of their half of the third inning, Xavier was cruising with an 8-0 lead.

The Pioneers would score once in the fourth with a bases-loaded walk and once in the seventh on a passed ball and a runner on third. Xavier went scoreless after the third inning but won decisively 8-2.

First Inning
During Xavier’s third plate appearance of the first inning, the Gators landed runners on second and third with nobody out.  Two outs later, their status had not changed.

And then 3rd baseman Noe Romo strode to the plate. Her double cleared the bases. Xavier 2-0.

Second Inning
With runners on first and second, Mckenna Hackett lays down a bunt and gets hit in the helmet on the way to first base. The ricochet off McKenna's helmet gives Sophia Jaramillo the opportunity to score from second base. Xavier 3-0.

With runners now on first and third, Sariah McNabb hits a grounder to the Pinnacle shortstop, allowing Leah Jollineau to score from third.

Third Inning
Three batters into the third inning, Xavier loads the bases with no outs. Two outs later, the bases are still loaded.

Mckenna Hackett to the rescue. Hackett knocks an opposite-field hit that scoots down the left-field line past a diving left fielder. The bases are cleared, and McKenna settles in at third base. Xavier 7-0.

McNabb handles the very next pitch with an opposite-field hit of her own to score Hackett and improve Xavier's lead 8-0.

Sydney Root pitched her third full game in as many days, and she dominated every one of them. Last night, she notched eight more strikeouts on her way to another outstanding pitching performance.

#4 Xavier plays #1 Queen Creek next Monday, May 18, at Grand Canyon University Softball Complex @ 7:00pm.
