Xavier Track lost to Perry 72-51 on the Brophy Track last Wednesday, Feb. 27; however, the meet was not without Xavier highlights very much worth mentioning.
Senior Jada Sims, Xavier's high jump and heptathlon record-holder, won the 200 meters (26.56) and high jump (5ft 6in) with some very impressive early-season marks.
Junior Sophie Brohard won the 400 meters (61.40) with a very solid early-season time -- a personal record in fact. She ran another 61-second 400m in the 4x400m relay at the end of the night.
Just a freshman, Maria Benitez turned in a solid 2:37 in the 800 meters. That time beats all Xavier freshmen last season in the 800m except Sammy Braun, who is currently one of Xavier's top distance runners. Keep in mind, this is the first meet of the season.
Look out for a new thrower to the Xavier track team. Sophomore Jozlin Tanner, in her first competition throwing the iron ball, took first place in the Shot Put with a throw of 26-5.50. Veteran thrower Kendall Swanson was not far behind at 26-3.
Seniors MaeveJones and JannaHynds went 1-2 in the Discus with throws of 72-7 and 68-4 respectively.
Being the first meet of the season, this was a time for the athletes to establish benchmarks by which they will be able to gauge progress throughout the rest of the season.
