Technology Integration at Xavier

Xavier College Preparatory has been integrating technology resources into our education programs for many years now, and as our school’s mission states, we are a Catholic community that strives to prepare young women of faith with the knowledge, skills, and integrity to meet the challenges of a changing global society in a positive and productive manner. In support of this, we have implemented a BYOD 1:1 Computing Program for our students.

Xavier provides an outstanding learning environment, which includes the ethical incorporation of technology into the curriculum as a means to enhance communication, academic enrichment and college preparation, and to follow the Church’s rich wisdom about building a just society. Starting with the Class of 2019 and successive incoming classes, every student is required to bring a personal computing device with her daily to school.

Your daughter will have the opportunity to use her device as a resource in her classes for: research, presentations, online learning, group collaborations, and classroom assessments; some classes, may even have the option of choosing between an eBook and a traditional paper text.

At Xavier, we integrate technology use where most appropriate in support of our curriculum and instruction goals; therefore, your daughter’s use of her device will vary based on the intended lessons and learning outcomes. For example, course materials, including syllabi, announcements, grades, and assignments are posted online using Canvas, an easy-to-use, cloud-based learning management system (LMS) that connects many digital tools and resources. Students use Google Apps for Education, an Internet-based tool that provides email, word processing, spreadsheets, presentation tools and collaboration. Students also use several other Internet-based tools including GatorNet, turnitin®, and Naviance. All students are also required to complete a one-semester course in “Computer Programming Essentials”.

Our goal is to excite, engage, and empower Xavier’s all-girl student body in STREAM (Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Math) education by providing hands on opportunities and role models, and we offer exciting elective technology courses such as Robotics, Maker Class, AP® Computer Science Principles, AP® Computer Science A, Video Art, and 3D Printing and Prototyping are available to students. As well, students have the option of participating in the EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) Club, an extracurricular activity that explores engineering disciplines and encourages students to consider the pursuit of engineering as an academic field. Likewise, upperclasswomen have the opportunity to volunteer for Student Tech Advisors, a program that provides near-peer mentoring in computing and programming.

Lastly, as our BYOD 1:1 Computing Program has developed, we support the fundamental role of parents to decide which technology device to select for their daughters (laptop, Mac OS or Windows OS), provided the device meets certain minimum requirements that align with Xavier’s instruction and assessment goals. We have further defined the types of devices that will meet our instruction and assessment goals for our students.

We also, highly recommend purchasing a rugged protective case and a warranty or other insurance protection plan for your daughter's laptop. Our technology department will offer basic technology support for your daughter's laptop through the department's helpdesk services; however they cannot provide major service to personally owned devices (may void warranties) and Xavier College Preparatory accepts no liability for student devices (please see the student handbook for more information).

NOTE: Cromebooks/Android Tablets/Apple iPads do not meet our minimum operating system requirements, therefore are not allowed.
