Known for its green vistas and warm, welcoming people, Ireland has long been a tourist magnet, but on this Xavier Alumnae (and friends) Trip to Ireland, we get off-the-beaten-path to immerge in the history and culture of the Emerald Isle while rekindling Xavier friendships. Join us September 29 – October 9 as we discover culture, cuisine and camaraderie on the Emerald Isle.

Immerse in culture, cuisine and camaraderie on this adventure! 

  • Explore Dublin with visits to sites like Trinity College and the area in which the founder of the BVM, Mary Frances Clarke, lived 
  • Walk through farmlands and small villages 
  • Learn the Irish jig and join in traditional music sessions 
  • Visit the apparition site at Knock 
  • Hike Croagh Patrick, Ireland's holiest mountain 
  • Visit Cliffs of Moher and Kilfenora High Crosses 
  • Explore the Ring of Kerry 
  • Visit UNESCO World Heritage Site Skelig Michael 
  • Get the gift of gab at Blarney Castle 
  • Stay and dine in a real castle 
  • Optional activities: Learning the art of falconry and flying a hawk, golfing, horseback riding and more!  

Itinerary

Day 1:
Depart Phoenix for Dublin. (Other departure cities available)
 
Day 2:
Arrive Dublin and transfer to the hotel.
In the evening, visit a local pub and learn the art of traditional Irish dance.

Day 3:
Explore Dublin by open-top bus on an exclusive digital scavenger hunt for Xavier alumnae. Visit iconic sites like Trinity College, home to the Book of Kells, as well as the neighborhood where Mary Frances Clarke, founder of the BVM order, lived, worked and worshipped. The evening is at leisure to explore the Temple Bar area on your own.

Day 4:
Head west across the Emerald Isle to discover the wild Atlantic Coast. Stop for lunch near St. Patrick’s Well, where you can see an alleged imprint of the saint’s knee where he baptized converts, and then walk about four-miles through the rolling green hills and villages dotting the Irish countryside to St. Patrick’s Church. Spend the evening at leisure in the quaint town of Westport. Snuggled on Clew Bay, Westport’s tiny main street is lined with pubs, cafes and shops giving an authentic taste of real Irish life.

Day 5:
In the morning, visit Knock, the apparition site which is a major pilgrimage route for people from around the world. According to 15 witnesses, the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. John the Evangelist, a lamb and a cross appeared here in the 1879. This is a recognized apparition by the Roman Catholic Church. In the afternoon, we will take to the hills again, strolling through green pastures from St. Patrick’s Church to Westport, possibly stopping at a local pub along the way gabbing with the local clan.

Day 6:
In the morning, hike Croagh Patrick. Considered to be Ireland’s holiest mountain, this is where St. Patrick fasted for forty days and forty nights and allegedly banned all snakes from Ireland. It is also a major pilgrimage site for the Irish people. Spend the afternoon at leisure in Westport. Perhaps, play a round of golf, rent a bike for a ride out to Achill Island, kayak through Clew Bay or go window shopping in Westport.

Day 7:
Today, we head south through the lunar landscape of the The Burren to Killarney. En route, we visit the famous Cliffs of Moher whose soaring cliffs plunge into the crashing Atlantic below, and Kilfenora High Crosses. Spend the evening at leisure in Killarney.

Day 8:
After breakfast, tour the famous Ring of Kerry including the Skellig Experience. Skellig Michael was home to monks centuries ago and has recently appeared in many films, including the new Star Wars. Along the route we will stop for lunch in a local village (not included) and see how keen sheep dogs are in a demonstration of their skills. Spend the evening at leisure in Killarney possibly participating in a traditional music session.

Day 9:
In the morning transfer to Blarney Castle, near Cork, to explore the island’s most famous castle, and kiss the Blarney Stone to get the gift of gab (if you dare...it’s about 50-feet in the air!).
Spend the afternoon at leisure in Killarney. Perhaps take a jaunting car ride to Ross Castle, hike or bike through Killarney National Park, play a game of golf and more.

Day 10:
After breakfast, transfer to Dromoland Castle, which can trace its history to Gaelic royalty, where you will be treated like a queen! Enjoy a free day to partake in the activities like “Landed Gentry”: play a round of golf, learn the art of falconry and fly a real hawk, canoe on the lake, try your hand at archery, or enjoy a massage.
 
In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner in a real castle!

Day 11:
Depart Shannon airport for Phoenix (other arrival cities available)
