Xavier graduating senior, Jada Sims, earned Honorable Mention for the AzCentral.com's 2019 All-Arizona Girls Track and Field Team for her performance as a heptathlete.
There were eight female athletes who were dubbed All-Arizona Athlete of the Year Finalists in track & field. And then, there were six athletes named to the Honorable Mention group.
Jada was one of those six, and it was because of her heptathlon performance at the Arcadia Invitational in Southern California in April of this year. Check out details of her performance in our April 6 Athletics News article
In a heptathlon competition, the athletes compete against each other in 7 events: 100 hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200 meters, long jump, javelin, and 800 meters.
Jada began her heptathlon journey in the summer of 2018, her first competition being June 2, 2018. She competed in four heptathlons that summer:
- USATF AZ Junior Olympic Championships, Mountain Pointe HS
- New Balance Nationals Outdoor, North Carolina
- AAU West Coast National Championships, Nevada
- AAU Junior Olympics, Iowa
Her first heptathlon score was 4137, and every heptathlon score since then has been an improvement. She finished last summer with a 4477. Her only heptathlon this year resulted in a score of 4709. That's an outstanding increase of 572 points since last June.
Her improvement can be attributed to her dedication to the sport and the opportunity for her to work this year with Coach Tim O'Neil (former decathlete and current coach for olympic athletes, including former Brophy athlete, Devon Allen)
In looking at national high school rankings over the last 5 years, Jada's school record of 4709 would rank her around the top 15, or better, in the nation for high school girls in each of those years.
And that is why Xavier graduating senior, Jada Sims, deserves to be mentioned in the list of top high school girls track and field athletes in Arizona for 2019.AzCentral.com article
