Last Saturday, Xavier Softball hosted the Boulder Creek Jaguars on Petznick Field for the first round of the 6A State Softball Championship. Xavier blanked the Jaguars 6-0 for their twelfth shutout of the season.
The theme of the game was the dominant pitching performance by Xavier sophomore pitching ace, Angie Falls. After throwing three no-hitters this season, Angie starts out the State Championships allowing just one hit from Boulder Creek.
In seven innings, Angie struck out 15 of the 22 she faced. That’s an average of two strikeouts per inning. She walked zero batters. She was one out away from a perfect game.
Angie closed out the game in the top of the 7th inning with a classic pitching performance. The first batter hit a line drive right back at Angie, who gloved the ball for out #1. The second and third batters struck out swinging. You can see her 7th-inning pitching performance in the highlight video below.
It took a while for the Gator offense to get productive. Going into the bottom of the 6th inning, Xavier held a slim two-run lead. The Gators scored four runs on five hits and a couple of Boulder Creek passed balls.
Sixth-inning clutch hits included:
– Noelani Romo’s two-out RBI double with a runner on second base
– Mckenna Hackett’s two-out single prolong the inning for Xavier
– Sariah McNabb’s two-out RBI double with runners on the corners
– Riley McKeever’s two-out, bases-loaded, RBI infield single
Xavier plays round two versus #5 Tucson on Petznick Field at 4pm today, Wednesday, May 7.
