Student Walks Red Carpet

November 16, 2022

Sejal Patel, a junior at Xavier College Preparatory, was recently
nominated for Best Director by the Young Artist Academy for her short film, Life with the
Patels.

The 43rd Young Artist Academy Awards was held at the Directors Guild of America in
Los Angeles in October. Patel attended the awards ceremony with her entire family,
including grandparents. She said, “It was really cool — one of the most incredible things
I’ve done. I felt like I made it walking down the huge red carpet!”

Patel started creating films in elementary school. She taught herself how to use a green
screen and CGI (computer generated imaging), and took film classes when she got to
middle school, which she continues at Xavier.

Life with the Patels is a comedy about and starring her own family. It was her first
scripted short film. Patel said, “My fondest memory from working on this film was collaborating with my family during shoots. Since all of the storylines in the film are true,
it was fun for everyone to relive all of these funny moments.“

Aside from film, Patel plays soccer and is on Xavier’s Track and Field team, where she
runs the 440 event.

Patel plans on creating a sequel to Life with the Patels. She hopes to attend USC Film
School after she graduates Xavier in 2024.
